DIY event giveaways can be the icing on the cake for your event. While it’s easy to completely miss the mark with your giveaways and party favours (who needs another branded blanket) , don’t fret because it is equally easy to create gifts that are spot on while also being budget friendly. Ditch the pre-wrapped, cliché, and store-bought items, and go for something thoughtful and a little more authentic. You can even go so far as to personalize each giveaway to make it extra special for your guests. At the end of the day, being tasteful and creative is everything, and we have some ideas to get you inspsited! Here are some of our favourite easy, DIY event giveaways.
Sweeten the deal.
What more could any guest ask for? Tasty DIY event giveaways are a guaranteed crowd-pleaser. Bake up a large batch of grandma’s cookies – so long as you aren’t afraid to share the recipe! After popping your cookies into a cute plastic or cloth bag, print off a cute little recipe card to tie to each bag. You can do the same for just about any baked good (brownies are a sure fire crowd-pleaser), just be sure to choose appropriate packaging to avoid gifting a squashed and melted mess! If you’re looking for a sweet giveaway that takes less prep, pop down to your local dollar or craft store and invest in some dainty mason jars, and fill them up with everything a person would need to bake their own chocolate chip cookies. Layer the flour, sugar and chocolate chips and tie a recipe card and measuring spoons onto the jar for the perfect all-in-one package. Another idea is to fill the jars with a variety of sweets, anything from fuzzy peaches or caramels to scotch mints.
Looking to show off your gifts in the kitchen? Miniature jam jars make for a great gift, particularly when the jam is homemade with seasonal fruit. Send your guests home with a sweet taste in their mouths, and more for later! Get creative with the labeling and decorations on your jars by personalizing the labels with each guest’s name, or, if your event is intimate enough, supplement the note by jotting down a great memory you have with them. Not a jam-making guru? We suggest trying your hand in it, because jam prep is easier that you think, and there are tons of great recipes online.
The taste of mint juleps
Want to leave your guests with the lingering taste of sweet summer cocktails? For the adults at the event, send them off with a bottle of to-go mint julep mix. Fill some small corked bottles from your local craft store with mint simple syrup and mint leaves (you can find some great syrup recipes online)! Attach instructions to add the mix to some good quality bourbon (or even better provide a single serving of bourbon along with the mix), topping the bottle off with ribbon or twine and a mint leaf garnish. This makes for an elegant, fresh gift and will make your guests relive the refreshing taste of your event.
If you’re looking for an impactful event giveaway rather than something that will sit on your guests’ shelves to collect dust, send them away with some sweet mini bouquets of freshly cut flowers, wrapped in festively printed wrapping paper. Attach ribbon or string to these tiny bouquets so that you can hang them off of the back of yours guests’ chairs. Another great option is to design your table centrepieces to allow guests to help themselves when the event is over. Small potted florals or rosebud vases are great options.
The true meaning of “DIY”
One of our favourite ideas is turning your giveaway into an activity where your guests can customize their giveaway. People will love the opportunity to get crafty and create something unique to them. I was recently at a rustic, country-themed wedding where they offered a cutting board branding station. Guests were gifted with a small wooden cutting board, which they could brand themselves at a station equipped with branding irons and various shape and letter attachments. Just be sure to have a facilitator on hand to supervise to make sure no one burns themselves! For a holiday party, gift your guests with a christmas tree ornament and create a station where they can paint or glitter their ornament.
If your budget won’t allow you to provide DIY event giveaways for everyone, consider incorporating a contest with prizing into your event, so at least a few guests can leave with a keepsake. Simple contests that involve sharing photos from the event for a chance to win are a great way to combine social promotion and gifting on a smaller scale, and on a dime!
