With Halloween just around the corner, you can bet that all the spooky decorations will be flying off the shelves faster than a witch on a broomstick. So what happens when you go out to buy some party supplies for your Halloween get together and nothing is left but a couple of glow sticks!? Three words: BLACK LIGHT PARTY!

Black lights are fluorescent bulbs that are filtered to only allow long-wave ultraviolet light through. When used in a dark room, these lights reflect off anything white or fluorescent creating a glow-in-the-dark effect that’s perfect for Halloween! The best part is black lightbulbs can be purchased at Walmart or any hardware store for less than the price of a large pumpkin!

So how do you go about creating the ultimate black light party once you have your glow sticks and black lights in hand?

Here’s 4 Steps to Creating the Ultimate Black Light Affair:

Step #1: Set the mood

Before you start decking out your party space, make sure all outside light is blocked out by covering windows and door frames with aluminum foil or black construction paper. The darker the room, the brighter your decor will shine! Now that your room is ready to go, let your glow sticks work their magic. Fill balloons with glow sticks and helium to create a colourful, overhead light show or craft illuminated centrepieces using glow sticks and styrofoam blocks. Who knew these tiny plastic tubes full of goo could be so versatile!? Colourful streamers, beads and even boas also make for some funky decor. Hang them around the black lights to create a shimmering chandelier look. Or if you’re really feeling artsy, purchase glow-in-the-dark paint at a craft store and create your own vibrant masterpiece!

Step #2: Illuminate your food and beverage offerings

Believe it or not, the secret to making your drinks glow is one simple ingredient…tonic water. It contains an ingredient called quinine which becomes fluorescent under ultraviolet light. Splash some fizz into any beverage and watch your dull drinks transform into a phosphorescent potion! This trick can also be used for making glowing gelatin. When preparing Jello, replace hot water with boiling tonic water to create a vibrant treat. Have a few sweet tooths to satisfy? Make skewered marshmallows by replacing the old wooden skewer with a glow stick wrapped in a pipe cleaner, or use the same technique with cotton candy to create some fluorescent floss.

Step #3: Get your party games glowing

Keep the fluorescent fun going with some DIY glow games. Fill your old plastic bottles with glow sticks to use as illuminated pins for a game of glow bowling. Or paint glass bottles and use glowing bracelets to create a radiant ring toss station. You can also put a unique spin on a classic and assemble a game of tic-tac-glow! Are your friends a little competitive? Up the ante and let the winners paint the faces of the losing team with fluorescent face-paint.

Step #4: Embrace the darkness

As the host, fully embrace the theme by creating a costume out of your leftover glow sticks. Dress in all black and glue the outline of a “glow stick stick man” on your clothes or use glow-in-the-dark duct tape. It’s a clever way to play up your theme and simple enough for a last minute, DIY costume! Lastly, don’t forget to give your guests a heads up about your black light affair. When sending out your invites, be sure to tell your guests to wear white or fluorescent clothing and accessories so they can glow with the theme too!
