Need a theatre space? Not to long ago, we were looking for a venue to stage an awards ceremony and couldn’t find a complete list of top theatres in the city anywhere. As event planners if something doesn’t exist, you create it! So here are our top 11 Vancouver theatre venues.

1) SFU Goldcorp Centre for the Arts

Home to SFU’s School of Contemporary Arts, the centre consists of studios and theatre space which serve as the training ground for the next crop of music, dance, theatre, film and visual artists. A 350-seat theatre called The World Art Centre is one of three meeting and event rental spaces available on a regular basis. If you need additional space, there may be more rooms available on an ad hoc basis.  For casual meetings, receptions or pre-event gatherings, their lobby/reception area is also available.

2) The Vancouver Playhouse

Intimate and also well-renowned, the Vancouver Playhouse is a prime venue for planners looking for something a bit more casual but no less dramatic. It’s the only smaller proscenium theatre in Vancouver which means the stage is framed with an archway that acts like a picture frame through which the action unfolds. This style of theatre was most common in the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries. Beginning in 1950, this style of theatre was mostly abandoned for a more open, undecorated stage style. With 668 seats, the Vancouver Playhouse theatre is located in the heart of downtown Vancouver at 600 Hamilton Street.
